BigScience was selected to be part of the Intensive Pro Bono Research Projects at the Public Interest Law Center at NYU Law, in collaboration with AI2! We organized a Legal Hackathon in the first week of January where 30+ NYU Law students were assisting with in-depth legal research and scholarship related to Large Language Models across several jurisdictions. 🌎🌍
NYU assembles teams of students from its LLM program to perform pro bono legal research for selected public interest organizations. Each team comprises students with varying professional backgrounds and countries of origin. Most are qualified lawyers in their home countries, and many have extensive experience in the corporate or public interest sectors. "When I was told about BigScience I immediately thought it would be a great fit for the NYU LLM Pro Bono Research Program supporting organizations that promote access to justice, equality and the public interest", Miriam Eckenfels-Garcia, Associate Director Public Interest Law Center, NYU Law.
The students drafted hundreds of pages of legal research documents such as a Legal Playbook – a legal research resource for various activities related to data collection, data governance, and the disposition of an AI model available as a public resource. The documents are currently under review and will be published shortly.
